Instinctual Knowing
How can we tap into our instinctual knowing and allow it to guide us?
How can we use our resources, skills, and gifts to contribute to the collective revolution of love and unity that we are calling in for this new year?
In the sacred calendar of the Maya, February 6th (1 Tz’i) marks the beginning of this 13-day cycle. This cycle is the final phase before we welcome the Solar New Year on February 18th (13 Iq), and carries themes of faith, loyalty, boundaries, and transformative journeys.
The 5 days before the Solar New Year, between 13-18th, is known as Wayeb or Tz’apin Q’ij, and serves as a transitionary period from the energy of one year to the other. It is observed as a deeply spiritual time in the Mayan tradition, used for introspection, inner resolution, and preparation—both physically and spiritually—to receive the new energy of the year (13 Iq).
Let’s start by taking a look at this upcoming trecena of Tz’i. Tz’i, the Nawal symbolised by the dog; guardian of justice, keeper of unwavering loyalty and faith, a bridge between the seen and unseen realms. Just like a dog’s keen senses, Tz’i guides us into alignment with universal order by awakening our instinctual knowing. They teach us how to remain loyal to our truth, and to our mission in the face of adversity, and our own shadows.
The number 1 is symbolic of the seed—the beginning of a profound journey of growth, an opportunity of vast discovery, and boundless potential. I often compare the energy of 1 Tz’i to the Fool card in Tarot, where the seeker embarks on a new path with a loyal dog by their side—representing guidance, protection, and unconditional love. This card marks the start of the hero's journey, and we could see Tz’i serving as a psychopomp on this Path; guiding one to confront their shadows, purify their heart, and align with cosmic truth.
The Solar New Year
As we move under the guidance of 13 Iq this year, we are being invited to open ourselves to new ways of communicating—with others, ourselves, and with the seen and unseen. It is a call to passionately stand in our truth; to breathe deeply, and to allow the wind of wisdom to guide us forward through a year of profound change.
13 Iq is the energy of wind, breath, and communication. It represents the voice of the ancestors; clarity, insight, and the power of words to create and transform. This energy encourages us to speak our truth, express our intentions clearly, and trust in the power of our voice to carry our message into the world. Iq connects us to the breath of life, reminding us to stay attuned to the winds of change that are constantly moving around us and within us.
The number 13 represents the spirit realm, the completion of a cycle, and culmination of a journey of growth that comes from persistence and commitment. Through clarity and new perspectives cultivated over Winter, we can expect our inner voice to be amplified. Now is the time to listen, and allow it to guide us more fully into our purpose. It is a year to explore our tenacity for inspired change, and our capacity to listen and speak beyond words. An invitation uncover our ancestral wisdom, and find ways to bridge it into our modern day lives in a new expression.
A Time of Renewal
We are entering a time of renewal.
These calls upon our willingness to let go of our old stories and identities to be reborn.
The journey to the new year, guided by Tz’i’s loyalty to universal truth, is a time of profound transformation—a powerful crucible of personal and collective healing.
Like the faithful dog in countless hero tales, Tz’i guards the boundary between what was and what could be. It ensures that those who cross these sacred thresholds do so with honour, truth, and the willingness to transform.
The Four Powers of This Cycle
To navigate this time of renewal with clarity, rooted in truth, we can focus on these four key practices:
Tapping into instinctual knowing
Orienting towards core values
Redefining boundaries with self and others
Uniting with like-hearted community
The Shadow of Tz’i: Facing Our Protective Mechanisms
Many of us carry protective mechanisms—patterns of behaviour that once kept us safe but now limit our spirit’s true expression. These patterns may have been inherited or self-developed, rooted in childhood experiences, ancestral trauma, or collective conditioning.
Tz’i invites us to recognise and dismantle these defences. We can begin this process by tracing the roots of these protective patterns, acknowledging their presence, and observing them without judgment.
Let’s call these the “old dog ways,” which may manifest as:
Rigid defensive behaviours
Unconscious loyalty to limiting beliefs
Protecting ourselves from vulnerability
Habitual responses that are rooted in past survival strategies
Steps to Integrating the Shadow:
Recognise the protective mechanisms within you—both learned and inherited.
Observe them with curiosity: Without attachment or judgment, witness the behaviours or thoughts that arise.
Understand their origin: Reflect on where these patterns stem from—whether childhood experiences, ancestral wounds, or collective conditioning.
Loosen the leash: Create somatic safety in the body and practice rewiring your stress responses to help dismantle the protective mechanisms.
Meditation Practice
Find a quiet space and sit comfortably with your spine aligned.
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to ground yourself.
Visualise your inner guardian or sense their presence.
Ask: "What are you protecting me from?"
Listen with openness and compassion, allowing any responses to arise in the body naturally.
Other Practices
To support this inner work, you may find the following practices helpful:
Cacao: To connect to the heart space.
Breathwork: To release stored tension.
Trauma-informed somatic practices: To cultivate safety in the body.
Journaling: To engage in inner dialogue and self-reflection.
Shamanic energetic cleaning: To clear blocked energies and emotional debris.
Journaling Prompts
To deepen your connection with this new cycle, the beginning of Spring, and this upcoming Solar New Year - you are invited to reflect upon the following prompts:
What journey am I embarking on at this time?
What qualities are accompanying me as I emerge into Spring?
What do I wish to devote myself to this year?
How can I stand for what I believe in?
What experiences or practices help root me in unshakable faith?
What truth currently seeks expression through me?
How can I better honour my soul’s journey?
How do I intend to foster community this year?
During this time of challenging circumstances on Earth —
May we feel resourced to embrace our Paths with loyalty, courage, and deep reverence for the individual and collective transformations that lay ahead.
Let us continue to walk together into this Solar New Year with our hearts wide open; beating with same the dynamic rhythm of the universe.
Let us unite to weave our wisdom into the fabric of cosmic memory; strengthened by the breath of our ancestors, carried upon the wings of eternal truth.
With love and gratitude,
Luzura x
